17 September to 30 October 2026

Itineraries and Traditional Gates (Itinerarii și Porți) is a travelling exhibition on the traditional gates of Gorj and Maramureș, read in dialogue with Brâncuși’s Gate of the Kiss. It brings together two wooden gates carved during artist residences and photographs from fieldwork in Gorj villages.

About Itineraries and Traditional Gates

The project started with field research. In the summer of 2026, the team documented more than 35 traditional gates in Gorj. Two new gates were carved during artist residences, one at the Museum of Folk Architecture in Curtișoara, Gorj, and one in Vadu Izei, Maramureș. The craftsmen were Ștefan Strâmtu from Gorj and Ioan Muntean from Maramureș.

The exhibition looks at the signs carved into these gates. The twisted rope, the solar rosette, the wolf’s teeth, the tree of life and the protective birds and animals all come from the same village language. Brâncuși’s Gate of the Kiss in Târgu Jiu is the point of reference. It shows how this old form passed into modern sculpture.

The first stop was the Village Museum in Baia Mare, on 17 September 2026. The exhibition then moved to the Museum of Folk Architecture in Curtișoara, from 30 September to 4 October, where it was presented during the symposium Sat în stat. Two more stops follow, in Târgu Jiu and in Bucharest.

The project was produced by the Docuart Association and co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund (AFCN). It continues the research on Gorj heritage from Lemnul, Pânza și Vorba and The Gorj. Constantin before Brâncuși.
